Maxine Flynn

FLYNN, MAXINE Maxine Flynn, age 84 of Waco passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2004. Services will be held at 1:30pm Friday, April 9 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with The Rev. David Leibham officiating, with a private graveside service to follow. Mrs. Flynn was born January 12, 1920 in Loco, Oklahoma to Walter and Vera Carter Coleman. She grew up in Eastland, Texas and graduated from Eastland High School. She was a graduate of Tarlton State College and North Texas State University and did graduate studies at Baylor University. Mrs. Flynn was a classroom teacher for ten years, eight of those at Waco State Home. She retired from WISD as Director of Social Services. Mrs. Flynn was very active in the community, serving on the boards of many organizations including Goodwill, Planned Parenthood, Marriage Counseling, Red Cross, Association for the Advancement of Community Workers, Help Is Possible, White House Conference for Youth, Heart of Texas Council of Government and City Council of PTA’s. She served on the planning committee of State Conference on Special Needs of School-age Parents, Crime Prevention and Drug Education Committee and is a past president of WISD Administrators Association. During WWII, Mrs. Flynn worked as a Control Tower Operator in El Paso and San Diego. While in El Paso she met her future husband, James F. Flynn. They were married in Waco on December 9, 1943. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, brothers, Reagan, Ed, and Marshall Coleman, and sisters, Mauverine Stover and Ila Mae Coleman. She is survived by daughter, Terry Stringer and Cotter of Waco; grandson, Cotter Stringer, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Mary Coleman of Jackson, Mississippi and Payte Meador of Kokomo, Indiana; brother-in-law, John Flynn of Lafayette, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the “Angel Fund” at Reicher Catholic High School or the donor’s favorite charity.
