Maxine Vunkannon Barton

Barton, Maxine Ardelle VunKannon September 29, 1917-January 14, 2006 Maxine V. Barton passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 in San Antonio. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 17 at First Presbyterian Church, Waco, with the Rev. Jimmie Johnson presiding. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Monday, January 16, at Wilkerson Hatch Bailey Funeral Home. Maxine was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Max Eugene and Myrtle Ivy VunKannon. She graduated from Central High in Memphis and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville June 6, 1938. She also attended The University of California Extension, San Francisco. She married Ernest F. Barton June 26, 1943 at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Waco, since July 25, 1948. She founded the Peter Folger Chapter of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, and also belonged to Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, PEO, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of 1812, the Central Texas Genealogy Society, the Pan American Roundtable, and the Dames of the Court of Honor. Maxine worked in Memphis, San Francisco, New York and Texas, but she considered her most important job to be that of wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 34 years, Ernest F. Barton of Waco. She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert E. Barton of Garrison, N.Y.; her daughter-in-law, Brenda D. Barton of Ossining, N.Y.; her daughter, Lecy Barton Benke, her son-in-law, Tom Benke, and grandson, Robert Benke, all of San Antonio; and granddaughter, Ivy Barton Burg and husband, John Burg of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Lee Luchini of Sun City West, AZ, and Margo Balderree and husband, Gene, of Colleyville, TX, as well as nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Maxine Barton Scholarship Fund in care of First Presbyterian Church, Waco, Texas, attention Jimmie Johnson. Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
