Melba Jean Durham

Melba Jean Durham, a beloved soul born on September 12, 1947, in DeKalb, Texas, left this world on February 7, 2025, in Waco, Texas. She was a sweet spirit whose kindness and warmth touched all those fortunate enough to know her.

A graveside service to honor Melba’s beautiful life will take place Friday, February 14, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, where her spirit will rest among the memories she crafted while she walked this earth. Melba Jean Durham will be deeply missed, yet her legacy of love and kindness will remain forever in the hearts of her church family and closest friends.

Melba's life was filled with joy and adventure, particularly her many trips to Hawaii and the Bahamas, where she created cherished memories while traveling with her friends. Her joyful spirit extended to her time spent at Friends for Life, where she engaged with others in her loving manner. A graduate of Mexia State School, she navigated life's journeys with resilience, she was supported for many years through the MHMR Group Homes, Foster Care, and Independent Living, where she was regarded as a kindred spirit by everyone around her.

Her connection with her faith was equally profound, as a dedicated member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. Her love for the church community was reflected in her active participation in her Sunday School Class "The Encouragers," a group that undoubtedly enriched her life.

Melba experienced periods of joy mixed with health challenges, and during those times, she found unwavering support from those who cared deeply for her. Special thanks are due to Sherry and Spike Pattillo, whose unconditional friendship made her feel like family, as well as their son, Dr. Matt Pattillo, who provided compassionate care during her times of sickness.

Melba lived with her foster care caregiver, Betty Sue Wells, for over eight years, where she enjoyed countless adventures alongside her roommates. Shopping for shoes and dining out brought her unparalleled joy, and these simple pleasures will be forever remembered by those who shared in them.

Melba’s family is small, she is survived by her niece, Tamara Dailey of Shreveport, LA, and sister-in-law, Debra Miller of Shreveport, LA. She also leaves behind her caring foster caregiver, Betty Sue Wells, as well as close friends Sherry and Spike Pattillo and Dr. Matt Pattillo. Melba had an abundance of friends who cherished her, making it impossible to list each name, but know that her heart held a place for you all.

Melba is reunited in heaven with her mother, father, a brother, her beloved roommate Clyda, and their little dog, Sara Beth. The love and cherished memories Melba created during her time here will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who loved her.
