Michael Neff Cassell of Woodway, 83, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2024.


The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Woodway First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Heyduck and Dawn Gilliland, Diaconal Minister, officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 3, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey’s Garden Room.


Mike was born September 20, 1940, to Stuart Kent and Catherine Neff Cassell and grew up in Blacksburg, VA. He graduated from Blacksburg High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. He had a passion for teaching and taught accounting at Georgia Southern University, the University of Kentucky and Texas A&M University before spending most of his career at Baylor University. He taught at Baylor from 1980 to 2008, served many years as faculty sponsor for Beta Alpha Psi and sponsor of the Accounting Careers Awareness Program for minority high school students, and was named to Baylor’s Emeritus Faculty. In 2014, Mike and his wife Ann were recognized by the Baylor Bear Foundation with the Moon Mullins Award for their leadership, devotion, and love for Baylor athletics and their support for Baylor's motto..."Excellence, a Tradition, a Practice, a Promise." Mike was an active member of Woodway First United Methodist Church, a longtime member of the Pathfinders Sunday School Class and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the church choir. He was also active in the Baylor Singing Seniors.


Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart Kent and Catherine Neff Cassell; and his wife of fifty years, Ann Chrisman Cassell. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Juanita Shaeffer Cassell, his brother Dr. Stuart Kent Cassell, Jr. and sister-in-law Martha Sim Cassell.


He is survived by his daughters, Ellen Bryant and husband, Graham, of Dallas, Elizabeth Bandy and husband, David, of Temple; and son, Michael S. Cassell and wife, Carrie, of Dallas; seven grandchildren, Maddie, Catherine, Logan, Cullen, Mason, Garrison and Landon; and brother, Jerry Cassell and his wife, Linda of Richmond VA; his niece, Ann S. Cassell, Blacksburg, VA; and his nephews, Jay Cassell and Joey Cassell, of Richmond, VA, and Chris Cassell and wife, Jennifer of Atlanta GA.
