Mildred Bostick Brinegar

Mildred Lucille Bostick Brinegar passed away peacefully at St. Catherine’s in Waco, Texas, on December 23, 2016. A graveside service was held on Saturday, December 24, at Moody Cemetery. Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Mildred, daughter of Veda Welborn Bostick and Seth Pendleton Bostick, was born April 3, 1912, east of Moody, McLennan County, Texas. After three years of schooling in a one-room school house at Liberty Hill, near her home, she transferred to the Moody school, riding her horse in from the country until she was thirteen. She graduated from Moody High School in 1929 and received her BA degree from Baylor in 1933. She spent twenty-eight years teaching school in Central Texas, first at Mound and then at Tokio. After the war she began teaching again at South Junior High, North Junior High, and finally at Lake Air Junior High School in Waco. One of the subjects she taught was Texas History, and she was proud to be descended from James Walker, Sr., one of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" settlers of Texas. In 1943, she met and married John McNamara Brinegar, a native Wacoan. She was an avid genealogist and spent her retirement years in the Waco library and in courthouses doing research, which she compiled into several books. She was a member of the Henry Downing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sterling C. Robertson Chapter of Daughters of Republic of Texas. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moody. In 1978, she and Mack built a home on Lake Waco, where she lived until being admitted to Providence Hospital after a fall on January 12, 2014. She is survived by her brother, Milford Nelson “Buddy” Bostick; her nieces, Ellen Bostick Deaver and husband, Ray, of Waco, and Martha Bostick Phipps and husband, Jim, of McKinney. She is also survived by a grand-niece Jenny Phipps Powers and husband, Roy; three grand nephews, Kyle Nelson Deaver and wife, Diane, John Lee Deaver and wife, Karina, and Jim Bostick Phipps and wife, Leisha; two great grand nieces, Morgan Deaver Snyder and husband, Scott, and Alexandra Lee Deaver; and four great grand nephews, Nicholas Elliott Deaver and wife, Anna-Louise, Ryan William Powers, Connor James Powers, and Wesley Scott Phipps. The family wants to express gratitude for her very special sitters, who assisted Mildred with dedication and love for the past three years at St. Catherine's.
