Norma Bryant Broom January 5, 1926 – September 2, 2006 Norma Bryant Broom of Waco passed away early Saturday morning, September 2, 2006, at the Westview Manor Nursing Home in McGregor. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, September 6 at the Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Bosque Chapel with Rev. Bryan Thornburg and Dr. John Woods officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6 – 8 pm, Tuesday, September 5 in the Garden Room at the funeral home. On January 5, 1926, Norma was born in Austin, where her father owned a creamery. She attended Austin High School and the University of Texas. At U.T., she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, earned a B.B.A., and graduated with honors on June 2, 1947. After graduation, Norma worked in the governor’s office in Austin. On May 23, 1948, she married Halsey Norman Broom and soon after, the couple moved to Waco where he served as the Chairman of Management and Statistics for Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business. The couple spent the rest of their married life in Waco, where Norma was a housewife and mother and a member of the Baylor Round Table. For many years, Norma was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Waco and supported many charities, including John Woods Ministries, Inc., Salvation Army, Billy Graham Evangelical Association and First Baptist Church TV Ministries. She also funded a scholarship at Baylor University. Many people relied on Norma and enjoyed spending time with her. She was a woman of strong faith, had a deep love of her family and friends, and always did what she could to help others. The family rejoices that Norma has gone to sit by the side of her heavenly Father, but her peaceful and loving presence will be sorely missed. Her parents, husband, and niece, Connie Rickard of Austin preceded Norma in death. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Broom Brinkman and husband Walter of McGregor; granddaughters, Erin Brinkman Kinch and husband Stephen and Jamie Brinkman, both of Fort Worth; sister, Dorothy Cook of Austin; nephew, Cory Cook and wife Diane of Abilene; niece, Candy Corwin of Austin; cousin, Ross Hicks, Jr. and wife Maxine of Waco; several great nephews and nieces; and many loving friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Woods Ministries, 3300 North Ridge, Waco, Texas 76710 or the American Cancer Society.
