Norma Quinn Staton September 19, 1925 January 5, 2015 Norma Quinn Staton, 89, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015. The family held a private, graveside ceremony Wednesday, January 7, at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. Father Joe Geleney, Pastor of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption, presided over the ceremony. Ms. Staton was born September 19, 1925, in Temple, to Alphonsus E. Quinn and Anna Scanio Quinn. She was married to Hiram Staton. She was a 1942 graduate of Waco High School, earned her Bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1947, and received her Master's degree from Baylor in 1961. Ms. Staton was a 30-year veteran of the Waco Independent School District. She began her career in 1956 as a 4th grade teacher at Sanger Elementary School, then served from 1962 to 1967 as counselor at Richfield High School. From 1967 to 1974, she was principal of Provident Heights Elementary School, a neighborhood school for grades one through six. During this period the school housed the Waco ISD Homebound Program, classes for educable mentally retarded children, classes for minimally brain injured children, and was the base school for the district's Speech Therapy Program. In 1974, Ms. Staton was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education in the WISD. She served in that position until her retirement in 1986. Throughout her career and after her retirement, she served in leadership positions in various professional and civic organizations, including: President 1973-74 of the Waco Public School Administrators Association, President 1988-89 of Delta Kappa Gamma, Vice-President of McLennan County Retired Teachers Association 1988, and President of Catholic Study Club 1996-97. She served on advisory boards of McLennan County Children's Protective Services, Central Texas Planned Parenthood Association, Evangelia Settlement, The Art Center of Waco, Reicher High School and Keep Waco Beautiful. Ms. Staton is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Staton and Carolyn Staton, Edward Staton and Billie Staton, and Walter Staton; her daughter, Ann Staton; seven grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law, Chris Staton Spicer and Cheryl Hebert, Nick Staton Spicer, Will Staton, Thomas Staton, Michael Staton, Blaine Staton, and Johnny Staton; and her sister, Rose Ann Barzak.
