Peggy Jean Place Bartley August 21, 1929 June 23, 2015 Peggy Jean Place Bartley, age 85, of Waco, Texas, departed peacefully, at home, on June 23rd, with her loving husband of 63 years by her side. Her memorial service and reception will be held beginning at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, 1300 Columbus Ave, Waco, Texas 76701. The family invites you to join us in giving thanks to our Lord Jesus for the gift Peggy will always be, and celebrating her life lived fully on earth and now gloriously in God's loving embrace and everlasting presence. Born August 21, 1929, in San Benito, Texas, to Pallie Brown and Wilbur Place, Peggy was the youngest of three children. She grew up in San Benito and Harlingen, graduated from Baylor University in 1949 with degrees in Education and Speech. Peggy earned a Masters Degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where she had met her husband, James Willard Bartley, Jr. of La Grange, Georgia. They married on January 19, 1952, in Harlingen, Texas, and together pursued Jesus' calling to live out the Gospel in Uruguay. In addition to raising four children, Peggy taught at the Baptist Seminary in Montevideo, and was active in the lives of many within their church and community, from 1952 until retirement in 1992. They continued serving others in short-term missions in Spain, Argentina, Mexico and El Paso, and led the Hispanic community Agape, at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Gleason and Doug Place. Peggy is survived by her husband, James; daughter and three sons, Nancy Gatlin and husband, Joe, Steven Bartley and wife, Ana, Michael Bartley, and Robert Bartley and wife, Cathi; grandchildren, Gabriela Colman and husband, Alfredo, Anali Gatlin, Ana Bartley and husband, Juan Pablo Ortega Marsiglia, Melanie Bartley, Kelly Bartley, Stephanie Bartley, Ryan Baxter, Kelli Touchstone and husband, Tanner, Kathryn Bartley and John Bartley. The family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the staff from Nurses Unlimited and Scott & White Hospice, for the compassion and care they provided Peggy and James over the past year.
