PETE M. MEJIA, 81, of Waco died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in a local hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church the Rev. Lawrence Soler and the Rev Anthony Ferrer officiating. Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Monday, April 30, 2001 and Rosary will be recited at 8:00 PM, the Rev. Lawrence Soler officiating, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Mr. Mejia was born October 19, 1919, to Jesus and Manuela Moreno Mejia in Waco. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother to all of his family. He was a graduate of Waco High School and attended Four-C College. He served honorably in the Army Air Force during World War II, where he received the Bronze Medal. He married Lucy Herrera on March 20, 1944 and was a loving and devoted husband for 57 years. Mr. Mejia retired from the Waco VA Hospital after 30 years of service. He also worked for Woodland Spring Nursing Home for 20 years. Sports were an important part of his life, having played semi-pro baseball and having been a Southwest Conference umpire for many years. He was an enthusiastic Waco ISD and Baylor University sports supporter and a member of the special events for both organizations until his death. Mr. Mejia was a member of the American Legion and a charter member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents Jesus and Manuela Mejia and his loving son Pete Ricky Mejia. He is survived by his wife Lucy; his daughter-in-law Connie Mejia and grandchildren Pete Charles and Kelly Maurine Mejia; his sisters: Juanita and husband Joe Rangel, Mattie Mejia, Jo and husband Larry Dean; his brothers: Jessie and wife Dolores Mejia, Tony and wife Carlota Mejia, Mickey Mejia, and Frank and wife Tanya Mejia and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be James Herrera, Michael Herrera, Christopher Herrera, Andy Mejia, Mario Mejia and Josh Ridings. Honorary pallbearers will be the Baylor Special Events Staff and Waco ISD Athletic Support Staff. Memorials may be made to the Baylor University Athletic General Scholarship Fund and Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund. WILKIRSON-HATCH-BAILEY
