MADDIN, ROBERT September 12, 1944-February 9, 2006 Robert Holstead Maddin died early Thursday, February 9, 2006. He was 61 years old when he succumbed to a long-fought battle with a rare kidney disease. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at St. Paul Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Born in Waco to Eugene and Lucille Maddin September 12, 1944, Bob attended Dean Highland Elementary School, Reicher High School, Sewanee Military Academy in Tennessee, and Richfield High School, where he graduated in 1963. He attended North Texas State and then transferred to the University of Texas in Austin and pledged Kappa Sigma Epsilon. While at the University he studied Classical and Ancient History. It was here he began his life-long interest in The War of Northern Aggression and a fascination with the tactics of World War II. After college Bob became a worldwide traveler and adventurer, living in Sweden, Mexico, Alaska, and Texas. An accomplished sportsman and woodsman, he hunted elk and moose in Alaska. Often alone and under extreme conditions, he had close encounters with grizzly bears and many various forces of nature. He caught more marlin off the West Coast of Mexico than most big game fishermen see in a lifetime. As an herbalist, Bob advanced the Social Revolution of the 60’s and 70’s. Often larger than life, he was a force of nature. For the last ten years he worked as an arborist, operating a landscaping service in Waco while struggling with his malady. Preceding him in death are his parents, Eugene and Lucille Maddin, and aunts, Katherine Holstead and Marion Hill. He is survived by his wife, Judy Wood; brother, William Eugene Maddin of Sidney, Australia; niece, Tracey Buchanan and her daughter, Jordan, of Brownsville; and cousins, Rick and Edward Hill of Houston. He will be greatly missed by many loving friends. Pallbearers are Tom Husbands, Jeff Ward, Clark Collins, Walter Lacy, Wade Rooks, Robert Wade, Andy Sichi, Aubrey Stringer, and Bill Gandy. Honorary pallbearers are Richard Sellers, Buck Boone, Dr. Pat Hernon, Dr. Bob Dillon, and Mike Wood. “And some of us are climbing on the peak, And some of us are camping on the plain; By pine and palm you’ll find us, with never chain to bind us, By track and trail you’ll meet us once again. We are fated serfs to freedom – sky and sea, We have failed where slumming cities overflow; But the stranger ways of earth know our pride and know our worth, And we go into the dark as Fighters go.” Robert Service Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
