SMITH, ROBERT Robert Gordon Berto Smith, age 57 of Waco lost his courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at his home in Woodway surrounded by his loving wife and three sons. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am Thursday, March 18 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Bill Smith and Rev. Wayne Sage officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Wednesday, March 17 at the funeral home Garden Room. Robert was born August 17, 1946 in Waco. He graduated from Mart High School in 1964. He attended Sam Houston State University until enlisting in the United States Navy in 1966 and served in Thailand and Japan. He returned to Waco after his father’s death in 1969 to run the family propane business. During that time he met and married his wife of 30 years, Margaret Ann Lynd of Mart in June 1973. He had been an insurance claims adjuster for the past nine years. Robert was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother. His unconditional love and support will always be remembered. He loved hunting and fishing from an early age and enjoyed teaching and sharing these outdoor activities with his boys. One of his greatest joys was being involved in the many sports activities of his sons whether through coaching or being a dedicated supporter. Robert was preceded in death by his father, B.W. Smith in 1969 and his younger sister, Elizabeth Ann Beth Smith in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, Cory Smith and wife, Jeni, Kent Smith and Tyler Smith; mother, Elizabeth Smith Nail all of Waco; sister, Sandra Smith Meridith of McKinney; nieces, Alice Meridith Hammons of Flower Mound and Emily Meridith Henderson of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; uncle, Dewey Glynn Smith and wife, Chris of Corpus Christi; aunt, Helen Smith Massey of North Carolina; and many close family members and friends.
