Roberta Farney April 1, 1910 – April 18, 2006 Roberta Farney passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2006. Burial will be graveside at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 22, in the Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church of Waco. She was born April 1, 1910, in Gonzalez County, Texas to Jesse and Ella Mae Preston. Following her graduation from high school in Nixon, Texas, she attended South West Texas State University for two years before moving to Las Cruces, New Mexico. There she met and married a local businessman, Homer Farney in 1932. In 1955, she returned to her studies, graduating from New Mexico State University with an elementary education degree. Roberta had a twenty year career as a public school teacher in the Las Cruces ISD. In 1975, she retired from teaching and moved to Waco to be near her family. She was a caring friend, mother and grandmother. Roberta was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church where she participated in the United Methodist Women, Weslyan Workers Guild and Mission Study Group. In Waco she was a member of several organizations under the auspices of the Federated Womens' Clubs: Beaux Arts and the Emerson Club. She was also a long time member of the Waco Council of Garden Clubs and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, in 1972; three sisters, Christelle Williams of Las Cruces, N.M.; Wilobel Bruce and Ruth Billings of Bandera, Texas; one brother, Joe Preston also of Bandera; a daughter, Mary Jo Wellborn of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Patricia Lee Wellborn and Joe Dale Wellborn and one great grandchild, Joaquin Adrian Lugo, of Columbia, S.C. She is survived by a sister, Jessie Mae Hurdis of Alamogordo, N.M.; a brother, Verne Preston of Nixon, Texas; a daughter, Helen Ann Shanley and her husband, Richard of Waco; a son-in-law, Dale Wellborn of Houston; three granddaughters, Barbara Wellborn of Danbury, Texas; Alison Lugo and her husband, Joaquin, of Pearland, Texas and Melissa Holland and her husband, Bret, of Garland, Texas; four great grandchildren, Astrik Wellborn, Alicia Wellborn and Joaquin and Gabriel Lugo.
