Ruby Nanny Rectenwald

September 9, 1902 — April 2, 2003

RECTENWALD, RUBY “NANNY” Ruby “Nanny” Rectenwald, age 100, of Waco passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2003 in the early hours of a glorious day. Fiercely independent to the end, she died at home in her daughter’s arms. Services will be held at 3:30pm Saturday, April 5 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 1124 Washington Ave. with the Rev. George Tzanakas officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Friday, April 4 at the funeral home. With tender remembrance, we will celebrate her long, full life, a life marked with great joys and great sorrows. We mourn her gentle passing. Without reservation, those whose lives she touched were better for having known her. Loved by many, a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, devoted caretaker and friend, she will be sorely missed. Born September 9, 1902, she attended Northern Arizona Normal School and played center for the 1922 Flagstaff Championship Girls Basketball Team. She was an avid bird watcher and animal lover all her life. The birds and squirrels that visited her yard daily will miss her, too. Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack, some thirty years past. She is with him now. Nanny, as she was known by all, is survived by her daughter, Joan Rectenwald; grandchildren, Victoria Rectenwald, Paul Rectenwald, Mark and Mary Vasek, Adrian Vasek, Austin and Robin Vasek, Brian and Dae Vasek and Susan Johnson; great grandchildren, Atticus, Lauren, Karen, Dustin, Cara Layne, Cole, Taylor, Kellye and Justin as well as her extended family who are great in number. Pallbearers will be Paul Vasek, Mark Vasek, Austin Vasek, Brian Vasek, Paul Smajstrla and Randy Daniels. The family would like to express special thanks to Sophie Vincent and Heather and Colton Henkel for their loving care and thoughtful attendance. Since Nanny was a defender of the weak, an advocate for social justice and a registered Democrat, the family requests memorials be made to charities of your choice.
