Ruth Dean Cowan Carter June 22, 1912 – February 6, 2007 Ruth Dean Cowan Carter, age 94, passed away on February 6, 2007. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2007 at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Wilkirson Hatch Bailey Funeral Home. Ruth Carter was born on June 22, 1912 to Roy and Hula Olivia Moon Cowan in Covington, Texas. Her family moved to Itasca, Texas in 1922. She graduated from Itasca High School and attended Texas Tech University. It was there that she met her future husband, Henry Nelson Carter, Jr. During the great depression, Ruth returned to Itasca and taught school. She married Henry Nelson Carter, Jr. on May 3, 1931. They moved to Hamilton, Texas where they lived for three years. They then moved to Hillsboro, Texas in 1934. During this time, Ruth served on the school board and was a member of the Sesame Literary Club. She and her husband and son moved to Waco in 1948. Ruth worked for the United Way of Waco for several years and was employed at Texas Employment Commission for sixteen years, until her retirement in June of 1977. She was a member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Jim Cowan and her husband, Henry, in 1988. Survivors include her son, Henry Nelson Carter III of Waco; her daughter, Janie Carter Atkinson and husband, Paul of Waco; her niece, Linda Kay Scott and husband, Doug, of Heath, Texas; nephews, Dick Cowan and wife, Jill, of Duncanville, Texas and Neil Clarke and wife, Robyn of Spearfish, South Dakota; her sister in law, Katherine Cowan and her beloved dog and faithful companion, Sydney. Ruth lived a long and happy life and was dearly loved by everyone who knew her. She loved her family and her friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to her caretaker, Jeanette Loden and the staff at Quality Care Nursing Home.
