Sallie B. Moncrief, 98, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at the Alterra Sterling House in Waco. Services will be held at 11:30am Monday, May 23, 2005 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Pamela Dykehouse officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitiation with the family will be from 5-7pm, Sunday, May 22 at the funeral home at 6101 Bosque Blvd. Miss Moncrief was born Jan. 7, 1907 on a family farm near McGregor, TX, the daughter of Robert W. and Fannie Lyon Moncrief. She attended Highland School and graduated from Waco High School in 1924. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Baylor University. For many years she taught school in towns across Texas, including Turnersville, Orange, Cameron, McGregor, and Waco, where she taught English at University High School, retiring in 1972. She was a longtime member of the former Herring Ave. Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School until the age of 95. She later became a member of Lake Shore United Methodist Church. For many years she was active in the United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, American Business Women’s Association, and other groups. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters: Helen Moncrief, Jessie Moncrief Dove, and Hattie Moncrief. She is survived by a great niece, Elaine Richards Hellmund and husband Gerardo Hellmund of Arlington, TX; a great-great nephew, Gerardo Nicolas Hellmund, also of Arlington; and a nephew-in-law, James H. Richards of Waco. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.
