Sally Amelia Davenport of Waco passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 in Wortham, Texas, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Family graveside services are to follow. Amelia was born November 25, 1916, in Eddy, to Joe A. and Florence Summers. During her early school years, she rode a horse named Dandy over four miles from the family farm to school. She was always determined to get an education. In 1934 she graduated from Bruceville Eddy High School and entered the University of Mary Hardin Baylor on a one-year scholarship. She gained all the rest of her college credits in the summer while working as a teacher in rural districts in Central Texas. She graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos in 1949 with a Bachelors Degree and later a Masters Degree in English and Education. Amelia married William Grady Stewart of Cego on December 23, 1937. After over 40 years of teaching together in Central Texas and San Antonio, he preceded her in death in 1980. Later she married Henry Davenport Sr. of Rosebud, a long time family friend. He also preceded her in death in 1994. Her interests included word origins, reading, and quilting. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teaching society, and Texas Retired Teachers. While living at Stilwell Teachers Retirement Residence, she often served in the library. In Rosebud, she was active in the First Baptist Church and the Garden Club. She is survived by her only daughter, Elaine Stewart Clark; granddaughters, Hope Urban and Leslie Clark; great grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah; as well as one sister, Dorothy Kerlee, of Fort Worth; and one brother, C.A. Summers of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to Stilwell Teachers Memorial Residence, 5400 Laurel Lake, Waco TX 76710, or to the Alzheimer’s Association of your choice.
