Seymour Neuwirth

June 30, 1920 — March 18, 2005

Seymour Neuwirth, 84, died Friday, March 18, 2005 in Temple. Graveside services will be at Congregation Agudath Jacob Cemetery at 10:30am with Elliott Wolpo leading the service. He will be buried next to his wife of 54 years, Esther Greenspan Neuwirth. A beloved father and grandfather committed to his family, Seymour was known for his compassion, dedication, kindness and integrity. He was generous of his time and appreciated for his creative cooking and “fix-it” skills. He did not seek the limelight, but could always be counted on to actively participate in community, religious or service activities. He was a humble man and never fully grasped the positive impact and influence he had on others, particularly as a surrogate parent to many. He took them in and treated them as his own, making them feel important, oftentimes simply by just being there to listen. He was a charter member of the Beverly Hills Lions Club where he served in all capacities, both locally and as the District Deputy Governor 2-X3 during 1980-1981. He was repeatedly honored for distinguished service, loyalty, and devotion to Lionism. His passion was supporting the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children in Kerrville, Texas. He was also a dedicated member of Congregation Agudath Jacob. He was secretary to the Board for several years and was honored for his service to the congregation in 1986. For numerous years, he was a member of the Burial Society, as well as serving as an usher during the High Holy Days. But more than in any other capacity, if you needed to find him at the synagogue, he was usually in the kitchen cooking. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow and scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America. As a dedicated supporter of education, he was one of the first male PTA presidents in the Waco Independent School District. A strongly patriotic person, he proudly served in the 116th Field Artillery 31st Division of the Army, “Battery C.” Professionally, he owned and operated Neuwirth Auto Sales and worked for many years with Sam Nay Dodge and Steakley Brothers Chevrolet. When he first came to Waco, he owned and operated Neuwirth’s Grocery Store. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Greenspan Neuwirth, who died on June 11, 1995 and by his two siblings, Shirley Kleiner and Alvin Neuwirth. Seymour is survived by his son, wife and grandchildren, David, Glynda, Tamara, and Tabitha Neuwirth of Temple, Texas. He is also survived by his daughter, Carolyn Neuwirth of Baltimore, Maryland, and two sisters from Tampa, Florida, Judy Schwartz and Marilyn Kelly. He was also a much-loved uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, as well as godfather to the Koss children. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children, P. O. Box 290246, Kerrville, Texas, 78029 or online at http://www.lionscamp.com/Donations.htmp.
