Shirley D. McCoy of Waco, Texas, entered Heaven’s gates April 4, 2024. Her memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in the chapel at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco, with the Reverend Alec Ylitalo officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, in the garden room at the funeral home.
Shirley was born May 1, 1937, in West, Texas, to Rudolph and Edna Rydel. After graduating from West High School, she pursued her education at Hillcrest Nursing College. She married her best friend and high school sweetheart, Charles McCoy, Sept. 7, 1957, and they were blessed with two children: their son, Bryan McCoy, and daughter, Sherry McCoy Fair. Shirley and Charles were longtime active members of Richfield Christian Church. Shirley worked for Dr. Jack Flowers at the Children’s Clinic for many years during the 60’s and 70’s where she attended to countless children that often relayed very fond memories of her as they grew up. She also worked for many years at Hillcrest Hospital Emergency room and often reflected how the job was both exciting and rewarding. Her nursing career culminated at Baylor University Health Center, where she served until her well-deserved retirement in 2006. She was a passionate fan of both Baylor football and Men’s and Women’s Baylor basketball and would watch them anytime she got the opportunity. She often enjoyed the company and many adventures with her lifelong friends Jeannie and Jessie.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Charles McCoy; her parents, Rudolph and Edna Rydel of West, Texas; and two brothers, Jerry Rydel of Waco, and Larry Rydel of Arlington.
She is survived by her son, Bryan McCoy and Scott Wright; daughter, Sherry McCoy Fair and husband, David Fair; three grandchildren, Nick Flowers, Taylor Flowers, and Ashton Griffith and her husband, Kyler; as well as her great-grandchildren, Baxton, Aubree, Jaxyn, Kodi, Kyton, Ashler, Kash, and Arlo.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at the The Arbor House, and Arbor Gardens Memory care for all their care and support, and especially Katelin and Chaplain Georgia with Enhabit Hospice.
