Sophie E. Powers

POWERS, SOPHIE E. Sophie E. Powers, age 81 of Lorena, went to be with her Lord Monday, March 29, 2004. Services will be held at 3:30pm Friday, April 2 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Harley B. Gordon officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Thursday, April 1 at the funeral home. Mrs. Powers was born October 19, 1922 in Clifton. She married her high school sweetheart Richard V. Powers July 12, 1941. In 1953 she founded Powers Embroidery, Inc. in her living room on Speight Street. She and her family grew the business into one of the largest chenille manufacturers in the U.S.A. She was preceded in death by her parents, Talma and Jack Thompson of Lorena, brother, Howard Thompson of New York, a sister, Wilma Lee Southerland of Temple. Survivors include husband, Richard V. Powers of Lorena; daughter, Shelia Reed and Ronnie Griffin of Lorena; son, Bob Powers and wife, Fredna of Waco; grandchildren, Buddy Reed, III of Lorena, Stephanie Endom and husband, Dan of Houston, and Jay Powers and wife, Donna of Waco; great grandchildren, Morgan Powers, John Endom, and Kaylee Griffin; sisters, Dorothy Crye of Waco and Merle Anderson of Bosqueville; and brothers, T. I. Thompson, Rayford Swede Thompson of Lorena, and Jay Thompson of Andrews, Texas. Pallbearers will be Billy Reed Powers, Barry Atwood, Marshall Schaeper, Clint Shelburne, Bruce Price, Jerry Pruitt, and Ronnie Griffin. The family wants to thank Marshall and Debbie Schaeper, Margaret and Larry Griffin and Providence Hospice. Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice or The Gideons.
