THORNTON, RET., S/SGT. JOHN Retired S/Sgt. John R. Thornton, age 75, of Waco died Friday, August 1, 2003 at a Temple hospital. Services will be held at 11:30am Friday, August 8 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Cecil McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Thursday, August 7 at the funeral home. John was born April 5, 1928 in Elkpoint, South Dakota. He entered the United States Air Force March 22, 1951 and retired September 1, 1971. He married Willa B. Higgs August 1969 and to this union one son was born. Survivors include wife, Willa B. Thornton; son, John C. Thornton; and adopted granddaughter, Alycia N. Thornton, all of Waco; stepchildren, Doris Tucker and husband, Harvey, Jeannie McKinney and husband, Willie, Jacquelyn Stinnett and husband, Warren, Mary Spicer and husband, Jack and Ronnie Higgs and wife, Patricia; twelve grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
