Suzanne Clinton Gorman Ensey Mrs. John Hanson Ensey II Suzanne Clinton Gorman Ensey died Tuesday, March 8, 2005. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery on Friday, March 11 at 2 pm. Mrs. Ensey was born in Waco, Texas on March 23, 1922, the second daughter of Fay Clinton Gorman and Harry Bernard Gorman. She was a fourth generation Wacoan as a descendent of prominent pioneer Waco settlers, Caleb Mead Hubby and William Swan Clinton. She was an honor graduate of Waco High School in 1938 and attended Baylor University from 1938-40. She transferred to the University of Texas in Austin where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 and a teachers certificate. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, The Racket Club and Alpha Omicron Omega. Following graduation from college, she taught at Lamar Junior High School in Bryan, Texas and later moved to New York City where she was on the staff of Life magazine. During the summers of 1938 - 1942, she was tennis counselor at Camp Mystic for Girls and later Camp Waldemar for Girls near Kerrville. On November 2, 1946, she married John Hanson Ensey II of Crondall, Owings Mills, Maryland at the First Presbyterian Church in Waco. Mr. and Mrs. Ensey lived in Baltimore, Maryland where she was a member of the Junior League of Baltimore, The Garden Club and The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. After returning to Waco in 1962 with her family, Mrs. Ensey served as President of the Waco Symphony Women’s Council, member of the Waco Symphony Executive Committee, President of the Woman’s Club of Waco, President of the Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, docent and member of the Historic Waco Foundation, Board Member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, member of the Art Center, Greater Waco Beautification Committee, University of Texas Alumnae Club, United Way of Waco, Cultural Committee of The Waco Chamber of Commerce, Planned Variation Board of the City of Waco, which helped fund The Art Center and other civic projects. She was a member of the founding committee of the Waco Cotton Palace Pageant and served on the Royalty Committee 31 years. She started the Castle Heights annual 4th of July parade. At the state level, Mrs. Ensey was a charter member of the Texas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., President of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Texas. At the national level, Mrs. Ensey was a member of the Board of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and First Lady of the Ladies of Dumbarton Board and member of the Executive Committee of Dumbarton House Board. She was made an honorary member of the Dumbarton House Board. Her name was placed on the National Roll of Honor of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Mrs. Ensey’s name was placed in Who’s Who of American Women in 1972 and 1998. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church since 1962, serving on the Altar Guild and The Board of the Women of the Church. Mrs. Ensey was preceded in death last year by her husband of 57 years, John Hanson Ensey II. She is survived by her son, John Hanson Ensey III, of Los Angeles, California; her daughter, Kathleen Gorman “Dolly” Ensey and son-in-law David Westenbarger of Austin; and her niece, Susan Tabb Ferguson and husband, William H. Ferguson of Waco. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hillcrest Hospital, especially Dr. Lisa Duchamp and Dr. Don Risinger; Providence Hospice and the St. Catherine staff who lovingly shared their kindness and compassion.
