HURD, SYLVAN Sylvan Avondon Sy Hurd, 80 of Woodway, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at home after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Services will be held at 11am Saturday, October 26 at Waco Memorial North Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. David Story officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Friday, October 25 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Sy Hurd was born May 18, 1922 in Lubbock, the son of Elmer D. and Madie Lee Hurd, and was one of seven children. He married Camilla Louise Wheeler on January 24, 1942. They resided in Amarillo; Houston; Seoul, Korea; and then settled in Waco 13 years ago. Sy valued the importance of family. He began working at age six to help support his family. It was also very important to Sy that he provide opportunities to his three children which had been denied to him, one of which was education. Sy valued the importance of education. He attended night school for 11 years, commuting from Amarillo to Lubbock while maintaining full time employment. He graduated from West Texas State University in 1960. Sy was employed at Continental Carbon Company, initially based in Amarillo, and then in Houston. He was Director of Purchasing prior to moving to Korea where he was Co-Director of Korea Continental Carbon Company. Sy also took pride in his golf game, teaching his son, Tim to play as soon as Tim was old enough. Sy earned many trophies in his amateur golf career, and was fortunate to play with well-known pros such as Dave Marr, Bob Rosburg and Henry Ransom. Sy served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, leaving his new bride. He served on the USS Enterprise and the USS Lexington, and was very proud of his contribution to his country during WWII. Sy was preceded in death by his infant brother, E. D. Hurd, his older brother, Leland Hurd, his twin sister, Sibyl Alexander, and nephew Richard Alexander. Survivors include his wife, Louise; their three children, Vivian Stidvent and husband, Tom of Waco, Tim Hurd and wife, Liz of Bastrop, and Sylvia Crixell and husband, Mike of Austin; sisters, LaVeta Rook, Eva Jane Moore, Annette Goforth of Amarillo and Grace Brown of Waxahachie; grandchildren, Christopher and Andrew Stidvent, Carly and Mason Huffman, and Daniel, Stephen and Sarah Hurd, and numerous nieces and nephews.
