MERRITT, THELMA BROWN Thelma Brown Merritt, age 82, of Waco died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at Providence Health Center after surgery. Graveside services will be held at 10:30am Saturday, September 27 at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements are through Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Thelma was born in Waco on June 16, 1921 to Ida and Charlie Brown. She attended Waco schools and graduated from Waco High School in 1938. After graduating, she attended business school. She was employed by Atlas Cement Company until she married Hal Edwin Merritt on April 19, 1941. Hal and Thelma made Waco their lifelong home; he preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of Lake Shore United Methodist Church. Thelma was extremely active in her children’s school activities, especially PTA at Lake Waco Elementary School. She was a homemaker and role model for her children. She was active in Waco Christian Women’s Club until her health would no longer permit. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kay Merritt McWhorter in 1987. Survivors include son, Gary Merritt, granddaughter, Lisa McWhorter Cain, grandsons, Charles McWhorter, Jr. and Patrick McWhorter, great-grandsons, Charles McWhorter, III and Aaron Cain. She also leaves behind her loyal canine granddaughter, Ethel Belle. Gary would like to thank Providence Home Health Care, especially Juanita, Karen, and Barbara for the excellent treatment that Thelma received during the past two years.
