Vera Faye Douglas Michaels, “Faye” to friends and family, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in Waco, Texas, at the age of 91. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018 at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Faye was born on September 11, 1926, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Paisley Steele Douglas and Frances Elizabeth Vaughan Douglas. Faye was raised in Henrietta, Texas, during the Great Depression in a loving and nurturing home by her mother, beloved uncle, Bee Vaughan, and maternal grandmother, Mary Nealanna Charlton Vaughan. She had three older siblings, Mary Elisabeth, Robert Nathaniel, and Paisley Joe Douglas. After graduating from Henrietta High School in 1943, Faye moved to Houston to join her sister, Elisabeth. Faye met Gregory “Greg” Patrick Michaels when they both were students at the University of Houston. Faye and Greg were married on July 31, 1948, in Houston, where they lived and raised two children. They were married for 48 years until the time of Greg’s passing in 1996. Faye worked as a medical transcriptionist at the Houston Veteran’s Administration Hospital for most of her career. After her retirement from the VA, Faye returned to work part time from home as a contract medical transcriptionist. She permanently retired so she could have more time to enjoy her circle of friends in Houston. Faye was a charter member of the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT) and a long time member of Westbury Methodist Church in Houston. She was an avid reader and lover of books, especially mysteries and true crime. Faye was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband. She is survived by daughter, Betty Lynn Harris and husband, Ron, of Huntsville, Texas; son, Douglas Brian Michaels, MD, and wife, Jill F. Michaels, DDS, of Waco; grandson, Norman Jeffrey Dugas and wife, Paula, of Huntsville; grandson, Brian Patrick Michaels of Washington, DC; granddaughters, Katherine Elizabeth Michaels Shaffer, DDS, and spouse, Alexis Shaffer, of Bethesda, Maryland, Leslie Francis Michaels of Washington, DC, and Mary Douglas Michaels of Atlanta, Georgia; great granddaughter, Amanda Faye Dugas of Huntsville; great grandson, Jordan Paul Silvertooth-Dugas and wife, Brittanie, of Willis, Texas; great-great grandsons, Jack Alton Dugas and Beaux Hudson Dugas of Willis; nieces, Karen Barber of Missoula, Montana, and Kay Jackson and husband, Tommy, of Houston; many great and great-great nieces and nephews; and many friends in Houston. The family would like to thank the third floor staff at St. Catherine’s Center for their care of Faye and helping to keep her comfortable in her later years.
