Vera L. Hooks Bowers April 18, 1922 - July 16, 2014 Vera Bowers of Waco transitioned on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at her residence in Desoto, Texas. Services will be 12:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24, at Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, at 500 Turner St., with Pastor Melvin Petty officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Vera was born April 18, 1922, in Otto, Texas, to John and Josephine Hooks. She was the ninth of 11 siblings, and all of whom have preceded her in death. She loved her family dearly and always put her family first. Vera was a long time active member of Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Waco, where it was evident that her most important role was to remain God fearing. Vera's spiritually driven life led her to sing in the senior choir, serve faithfully on the usher board, and preside over the Missionary society. Her culinary arts led her to serve on the dining room staff for many years. She not only worked in Vacation Bible School VBS but also involved her children and grandchildren in VBS. Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Bowers; and two sons, Richard Earl and Gary Donald Bowers. She is survived by her five beloved daughters, ShirleAnne Mitchell, Charles Etta Woods, Evelyn Akram, Doris Williams and Vera Henderson; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Nadir Akram, Colby Henderson, Richard Bowers III, Willie Lee Edwards Jr., Terrance Gilliam, Don Garrett and Reginald Moore. Honorary pallbearers are Kermit Mitchell, Martin Woods, Charlie Williams, Nathaniel Henderson , Gene Whitten, and Kenneth Betters. Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Research in honor of Vera.
