Vernon C. Payne

VERNON C. PAYNE Vernon C. Payne, age 88, of Waco, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 in a Waco hospital. Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 10, 2002 at Waco Memorial Park with Rev. Robert Morgan officiating. Visitation with the family will be 11:30 to 1:00 P.M. Monday at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque. Mr. Payne was born February 14, 1914 in Scurry Co., Texas. He graduated from Hardin Simmons University with a BA degree and received his Masters degree from Texas Tech University. He married Thora Brigance on September 15, 1945 in Levelland, Texas. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in North Africa and Italy. He was an educator with the Texas Public School Systems for 38 years. He was an administrator for the Waco Independent School District from 1970 to 1984. He was a member of numerous Texas Educators’ organizations, the Baylor Fast Break Club and the Lions Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Waco. He was preceded in death by three children. Survivors: Wife, Thora Payne of Waco; daughter, Kippy Caraway of Houston; granddaughter, Kristy Caraway of Houston; two sisters, Thelma Armstrong of Lubbock and Vivian Pete Poston of Ruidoso, New Mexico; brother, E. C. Payne, Jr. of Levelland. Pallbearers: Nello Armstrong, Scott Payne, Brent Armstrong, Bill Caraway, Dr. James Mathis and Dr. Barry Thompson. Honorary pallbearers: All his golfing friends.
