Virginia Lee Hicks Stratton May 25, 1908 November 30, 2012 Virginia Lee Stratton passed away at Ridgecrest Retirement Center in Waco, on November 30, 2012. Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 3, at Oakwood Cemetery. The memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. at Central Christian Church in Waco with the Reverend Richard Roland officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Central Christian Church. Virginia was born in Crawford, Texas on May 25, 1908 to Mamie Miller and David Nunn Hicks. The family moved to McGregor the next year and then moved to Waco in 1916. She was educated in the Waco Public Schools, graduating from Waco High School in 1926. She graduated from Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee and attended Baylor her Junior year. She married Leslie Martin Stratton on October 12, 1929 and they were happily married for 70 years. After his retirement from Stratton Furniture Company, they traveled extensively. He died March 22, 2000. Virginia was always interested and active in charity, civic and cultural organizations and schools in Waco. She served as President of Evangelia Settlement, Latin American Center and Belle Fleur Garden Club. She was county chairwoman of the March of Dimes, representing Waco at the national meeting in New York City. She was active in Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of Central Christian Church since 1931, and served as President of Christian Womens Fellowship and also served as a teacher and deaconess. She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers; Miller, David and Edwin Hicks; and one sister, Helen Stern. She is survived by three children; daughter, Shirley and Mike Lanham of Waco; two sons, Leslie Stratton Jr. and Doris of Texarkana, and Jerry Stratton and Patty of Brenham; sister, Patricia Clay of Dallas; brother, Harold Hicks of Austin; sister-in-law, Polly Hicks of Ft.Worth and sister-in-law Bonnie Hicks of Grand Prairie; brother-in-law William Stern of Bedford, Ma. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Jennifer and Ted Weggeland of Riverside, Ca.; Lynn and Jack Allinson of Waco; Julie and Kyle Danehy of Austin; David and Julie Stratton of Houston; Mary Jo Stratton of Austin; Ginny and Garland Smith of Austin; nine great-grandchildren and many cousins , nieces and nephews. Virginia Lee will be remembered as a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed and loved all of her family as well as her extended family and many friends. She lived a long and happy life and was an inspiration to all who knew her. We will miss her positive attitude, her fun and happy spirit, beautiful smile and her love and support. Mother was a true blessing in our lives and we will always remember her fondly.
