Truman Nix June 2, 1925-November 2, 2005 Truman Nix, 80, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005 in Waco, TX. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov 5 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco at 9:30 AM. There will be a graveside service Saturday in Loraine, TX at 4:00 PM. The family will receive visitors Friday, November 4 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Nix was born June 2, 1925 to Walter Houston and Dink Nix in Wastella, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers, Raymond, Dennis, Opal, O.M. and Dewey Nix and one sister, Vera Nix Bingham. Truman graduated from Loraine High School in 1943. He joined the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his return Truman married his high school sweetheart, Mavis Webb, on February 3, 1946. With great encouragement from Dr. Bruce Johnson, his home town doctor, Truman entered McMurry College on a football scholarship. He served as co-captain of the football team and was selected all conference on both offense and defense. He was named to the McMurry Hall of Honor in 1988. Truman spent 34 years teaching and coaching in West Texas at Rule, Hamlin, Andrews, Wink and Colorado City. The last 10 years of his professional career was at Waco Midway. Coach Nix was very active in the Texas High School Coaches Association serving several years as regional director, a member of the All Star Selection Committee and as President of the Association in 1968. He coached the North All Stars and was later inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor. He also served on the board of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and represented Texas on the National Health Council and was recently asked to serve on the McMurry University Athletic Council. Truman loved teaching, coaching and in his earlier years teaching Sunday school. He was a member of Woodway First Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and one of his greatest pleasures was teaching others how to love the outdoors as much as he did. Truman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mavis Nix of Waco, and four children, Glen and wife, Glenda of Valentine, Randy and wife, Wilma of Midland, Dewain and wife LaDonna of Lubbock and Kandice Nix Frost and husband Ronnie of Stephenville. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Pepper Nix of San Angelo, Sundi Sanderson and husband Jared of Bastrop, Kaci Haynie and husband Dennis of Midland, Kobi Nix of Lubbock, Adam Nix of Alpine, Matt and Travis Nix of Lubbock, Brittany, Kyla, Maci, Kelci and Dustin Frost of Stephenville. Two great grandchildren, Mikala and Blayde Haynie of Midland, one brother Doyce Nix of Hobbs, New Mexico and one sister, Lela Lucas Richburg of Andrews. Truman’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
