Walter W. Steinmann November 5, 1925 – October 9, 2009 Walter W. Steinmann, 84, of Waco passed away October 9, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 13, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 12, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Walter was born November 5, 1925, in Waco. Walter graduated from Waco High School where he was member of the Mask and Wig Drama class. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and entered WWII as a radarman onboard the destroyer USS Portfield. He received eleven battle stars for loyal service from November 1943 to April 1946. A journal of his service aboard ship was bound and placed in the Texas Collection at Baylor University. A paver in his honor was placed in the The Veterans' Walk of Honor at the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg. After leaving the Navy, he attended Baylor University where he earned both BA and master degrees in history and education. After graduation, Walter began his career in education as the first male WISD classroom teacher. Three years later, he became an elementary principal. During this time, he helped to develop the summer enrichment program for the gifted and talented students. In his 36 years of dedicated service in education, he touched the lives of countless children in Waco. After retirement, Walter delighted in spending time with family, gardening, fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Mina Steinmann. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Nita Steinmann; and his son Dr. Bryan Steinmann and wife, Christine; and two grandsons Carson and Blake; one brother, Bob Steinmann and wife, Gladys; and four nieces and nephews. The family is deeply indebted to Visiting Angels and Providence Hospice for their loving care during his illness. Anyone wishing to do so, can make memorials to Meals on Wheels, Columbus Ave. Baptist Church or charity of their choice. Papa is loved and deeply missed.
