SMITH, JR., WHITT Whitt Smith, Jr., age 76, of Hewitt died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at a local hospital, after a two year battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11:30am Saturday, January 18 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with Steve Chisolm of Red Oak, Texas officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5-7pm Friday, January 17 at the funeral home. Whitt was born July 29, 1926 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He moved to Waco as a small child, where he later graduated from Waco High School in 1944. He met his wife, Mable Ruth Sorley, of 54 years while attending Waco High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in the Cadet Program where he served for one year. Whitt attended college at NTAC and Baylor University until he withdrew to assist his family, due to the death of his father. Following his marriage he worked in Waco, Dallas and later moved to Houston in 1957; where he and Ruth went on to open operate Oak Forest Htg./AC Co for 43 years. He retired and later moved to Hewitt in January of 2001. Whitt was loved and admired by all those who knew him. His passions were fishing, photography, conversation, sunsets and gazing at the stars. His most treasured possession was love for his family. He enriched the lives of all who knew and loved him. His love will live in our hearts forever. He is preceded in death by his parents, Whitt Smith, Sr. and Laura Lee Langford Smith of Waco. Survivors include his wife, Mable Ruth Smith of Hewitt; daughter, Peggy Youtz and husband, Gary of Hewitt; son, Whitt Smith and wife, Jerrie of Carrollton; grandchildren, Chris, Jessica, and Jennifer Talley, and Shelby and Whitney Smith; sister, Carey Ann Smith of Dallas; brother, Wayne Smith and wife, Norma of Hewitt; niece, Kathy Smith of Carrollton; nephews, Mark Smith and wife, Angela of Houston and Ken Sorley and wife, Mary of Woodway; cousin-in-law, Bill Swenson and wife, Jadean of Waco, special friends, Carmen, Rhett, Betty B., Bettye G. and a host of dear friends. Pallbearers will be Bill Swenson, Gary Youtz, Chris Talley, Clay Wurzlow, Ken Sorley and Gary Allman. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Stackhouse, Murray Friedholm, Dr. Charles Dulaney, Marion Jack Anderson, Gordon Putnam and Tom Jaquette. Memorials may be made to Oakwood Cemetery for Mutabilis Rose to be planted in memory of Whitt Smith or in memory contributions may be made to NRA-ILA www.nraila.org.
