Wilburn Curnutt

January 26, 1920 — March 28, 2004

CURNUTT, WILBURN Wilburn Curnutt, age 84 of Waco died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at a local nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30pm Wednesday, March 31 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Pamela Dykehouse officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Tuesday, March 30 at the funeral home. Mr. Curnutt was born January 26, 1920 in Trinidad, Colorado to C.F. and Florence Curnutt. He came to Waco at the age of ten to the Methodist Children’s Home. He was a graduate of Waco High School, Class of 1939. He received a football scholarship and attended Weatherford College then transferred to the University of North Texas on another football scholarship. He was a standout player earning all-conference guard honors. He played on the team which went to the first bowl game ever at North Texas, which they won. He received a Master of Arts in 1947. He married Angelina Meredith in Denton July 13, 1946. He served for a short time in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked nearly 30 years at the V.A. Hospital in Waco retiring in 1977. After retirement he became well known for his pecan tree grafting. He had served as a Boy Scout leader for a number of years as well as a Little League Coach. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #440 and was a member of Lakeshore United Methodist Church. Survivors include wife, Angelina Curnutt of Waco; son, Randy Curnutt and wife, Kristine of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; daughters, Melinda Dodd and husband, Troy of Kingwood and Nancy Stone and husband, Travis of Houston; grandchildren, Kelly Curnutt of Los Angeles, Kari O’Neill and husband, Billy, Keegan Curnutt all of Seattle, Washington, Kyle Curnutt of Bellingham, Washington, Lacy Belote and husband, Jason of Dallas, Tripp Stone and Tyler Stone both of Houston; great granddaughter, Kevan Curnutt; sister, Thelma Scales and husband, George of Clovis, New Mexico; and brother, Harold Curnutt and wife, Betty of Blessing, Texas. The family would like to especially thank the secure unit staff at Crestview Nursing Home for their loving care and support of Wilburn.
