Wiley W. Stem, Jr.

October 31, 1918 — October 7, 2001

WILEY W. STEM, JR., 82 of Lott, died Sunday, October 7, 2001 in a Temple hospital. Graveside services with military honors will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at Waco Memorial Park, the Rev. Richard Jenkins and the Rev. Randy Osborn officiating. Mr. Stem was born October 31, 1918, and grew up in Waco, graduating from Waco High School and Baylor University Law School. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in March, 1941 and served as a member of the 36th Division Tpatchers in North Africa and the European Theater during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit and the Purple Heart. He retired as Brigadier General after 35 years in the Texas National Guard. He married Minnell Miller November 9, 1942. Mr. Stem served as City Attorney for Waco for a number of years before entering private law practice with Wilson, Olson, and Stem. He enjoyed many years of raising cattle on his farm in Falls County. He was an avid hunter. He and his wife were members of Cedar Springs United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents Wiley Wilson Stem and Ada Melinda Rowe Stem and his sister Geraldine Stem Webb, and an infant grandson. Survivors include his children: Sherilyn Stem Lewis and her husband Jerry of Woodway, Merilyn Stem Sutton and her husband Bill of Houston, Carolyn Stem Range and her husband Mark of Mart; Wiley William Stem III and his wife Susan of Lott and Robert Miller Stem and wife Celia of Lott; and a cousin, who was like another son, Pete Rowe and his wife Dana of Mart; his grandchildren: Chuck Lewis and his wife Lisa, Chris Lewis and his wife Brenda, Louis Trenchard and his wife Kim, Todd Trenchard, Clint Massman, Katy Kupcak and her husband Jared, Travis Massman, Clay Range, Scott Stem, Bryan Stem, Wiley Stem IV, Anita Stem Sarah Stem, Robert William Stem, John Stem, Pete Rowe, and Blake Rowe; great grandson, Brian Lewis; and his brothers: Jack Stem and his wife Jo of Marlin and Alva Stem, Sr and his wife Helen of Waco and a brother-in-law: Winston Miller of Lafayette, CO. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will be at 9922 Forest View in Woodway. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. WILKIRSON-HATCH-BAILEY
