POWELL, WILLARD Willard Powell, age 89 of Waco died Monday, March 15, 2004 at a local hospital. Services will be held at 2pm Thursday, March 18 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Minister John Rainey officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Wednesday, March 17 at the funeral home. Willard “Shorty” “PaPa” Powell, Sr. was born December 28, 1914 in Chilton to Robert E. and Mabel Ogg Powell. He was the sixth of eight children. He grew up in Chilton and went to Chilton School. He married Helen Johnson Powell September 2, 1939. They were married 64 joyful years. He worked at Bluebonnet Ordnance in McGregor during WWII. After the war, he worked a short time for Central Freight. He went to work at Central Paint and Wallpaper starting on September 15, 1948 and retired on December 31, 2002. His career spanned 54 years. He was a member of Church of Christ Southside on S. Loop 340. He was a quiet man but a strength for all his family both physically and spiritually. God had given him an abundance of love and he shared that with all family and friends. He will be remembered as “Shorty” and later as “PaPa” and his love of Nashville and country music with guitar pickin’ and fiddle playin’ Willard was preceded in death by his name sake and beloved son Willard Hollis Powell, Jr. He is survived by his loved and faithful wife, Helen Powell, daughter, Frances Neill and husband, Bob; sister, Marie Johnson; brother, Robert Powell and wife, Jean; grandchildren, Holly Jackson and husband, Mike, Robin Deihl and husband, Craig, Eric Powell and wife, Kathy, Terry Neill and wife, Marlene, Theresa Schmunsler and husband, Brian; daughter-in-laws, Carolynn Powell and Gay Powell; great grandchildren, Michael Jackson, Callista Jackson, RileyAnn Schmunsler, Kimberly Cutler and Kayci Cutler. Pallbearers will be Terry Neill, Eric Powell, Mike Jackson, Brian Schmunsler, Craig Deihl, and Bill Korioth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association or your favorite charity.
