William Bruce Sanders, MD September 23, 1934 October 11, 2008 William Bruce Sanders, MD passed away Saturday, October 11, 2008 at his home. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 14 at the Norwood Cemetery in Hearne, TX. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 13 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Bruce was born September 23, 1934 in Greenwood, MS to Woodrow and Inez Cotton Sanders. He was married to Elsa Thames for over fifty years. He graduated from Baylor University in 1955. While at Baylor, he was a member of Tri Beta and AED. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1959, where he was a member of Phi Chi. He interned at Nashville General and his residency training was at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville and Scott and White Hospital in Temple. He served as a Flight Surgeon in the U. S. Army from 1966 to 1968. In 1967 and 1968, he was a flight surgeon with an assault helicopter company in Phuoc Vin and Phu Loi Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star with V and Oak Leaf Cluster, an Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and an Army Commendation Medal. Dr. Sanders came to Waco in 1971 to continue his medical practice. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of OB/Gyn, and a Fellow of the American College of Ob/Gyn. He was a member of the McLennan County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Charles Sanders. Survivors include his wife, Elsa Sanders of Waco; daughter, Lynne Smiland of Sanger; daughter, Carol Hillhouse and husband, Joe of Panhandle; son, Bill Sanders and wife, Jane of Waco; son, Tim Sanders of Waco; several grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Sanders of Portland, Maine; and brother-in-law, C. B. Thames, Jr. and wife, Sue. The family requests memorials be made to the Salvation Army or the Dr. Brian Aynesworth Memorial Library Fund.
