William Richard "Rick" Thompson

December 3, 1933 — April 9, 2025

Waco

Rick Thompson, beloved husband and father, passed away April 9, 2025, at Hewitt Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Hewitt, TX after a brief illness. A graveside service will be held on April 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bosqueville Cemetery in Waco, TX.

Rick Thompson was born in Emhouse, TX on December 3, 1933 to William Roy and Ruth Hazel Thompson. In his youth, Rick attended Bradfield Elementary, Highland Park High School, and Allen Military Academy before graduating high school in 1951. Rick also attended SMU from 1951–1956, earning his BBA. A few highlights from Rick’s younger years were being a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, a Golden Gloves boxer and a dance instructor at Arthur Murray. Rick enlisted in the Navy in March of 1956 and served at the Construction Battalion Center, Port Hueneme, CA for two years. Afterward, Rick attended Graduate School at Northwestern University of Chicago in 1961 earning a Hospital Administration degree. He was a salesman for KPMC insurance in Dallas and a stockbroker for Bache and Company for five years. In 1968, Rick went on to work in the brokerage department at Shearson and Hamill for two years, while living in Gramercy Park in New York City and obtaining his Master of Arts degree from New York University in October 1969.

After returning to Dallas in 1970, he met his current wife Margie in 1975, and they were married in 1982 at Westminster Abbey in London, England. Rick and Margie loved to travel, play golf, and play tennis, all while Rick worked the NY Times crossword puzzles. Rick was always ready to show card tricks to anyone, and he never missed any opportunity to offer stock advice, whether you asked him or not. He loved snacking on walnuts and making his ‘famous’ tuna fish sandwiches. With a glass of iced tea, Rick was always eager to sit down for a meal with his children and grandchildren. He and Margie participated in fellowship bible studies for many years and found a great community through their faith. Through various life transitions, Rick and Margie were joined at the hip and did everything together, making an impact on whomever they met; their genuine warmth often led to their ending up on a first name basis with the staff of their favorite restaurants, especially Geroge’s in Waco.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents and he is survived by his wife, Margie McCarter Thompson. Rick is survived by his children William R. Thompson (Evelyn) and Tamareh L. Tuma (John) by marriage to Joyce Mays McClellan, and David T. Wilkie (Ann), Elizabeth A. Golson (Cory), Catherine W. Ziegler (Joe), and Thomas B. Wilkie by marriage to Betty Ann Wilkie. Rick is survived by his grandchildren Justine Thompson, Wm. Raymond Thompson, Portia Hicks, Bianca Hunter, John “Jet” Tuma, William Wilkie, Caroline Golson, Ashley Ziegler, Shelby Wilkie, and Colton Wilkie and by his five great-grandchildren. Rick is also lovingly remembered by the members of the McCarter family.
