Zoie Alyne Cantrell Vardeman, 100, passed away on January 6, 2017 at Regent Care Center, Waco, Texas. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 12 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home with Rev. Kip Osborne officiating. Burial will follow at White Rock Cemetery in Ross, Texas. Visitation with the family will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Zoie was born on June 11, 1916, in Ellis County, Texas to D.E. and Vera Cantrell. She attended school in Birome and Penelope, Texas and graduated with the Penelope High School Class of 1934. She was a professional women’s softball player and pitched for the RT Dennis Furniture Company’s women’s professional softball team of Waco. She also played for the L Fred and Sons’ Jewelers All Star Women’s softball team and the Telephone Girls women’s softball team of 1948. Many games were played at Katy Park in Waco. Zoie worked for Mr. Bill Porter, who owned and operated Porter’s Pharmacy. Zoie was a long-time, active member of Western Heights Baptist Church. Zoie is preceded in death by her parents, D.E. and Vera Cantrell; siblings, Eugene, Aldon, Lucille and D.E.; her husband, Alton Vardeman; and her stepchildren, Garnet Vardeman and Dixie Vardeman Wilson. Zoie is survived by her son, David Vardeman of Waco; her stepson, Gene Vardeman and wife, Hazel, of Waco; her daughter-in-law, Jean Vardeman of Waco; her grandchildren, Cindy Vardeman Hester and husband, David, of Waco; Kathy Vardeman Garner and husband, Steve, of Austin; Larry Vardeman and wife, Debbie Wright Vardeman of Waco; Becky Vardeman Murphy and husband, Randy, of Waco; Janice Vardeman Turk and husband, Rick, of Salado; Karen Vardeman Neal and husband, Chuck, of Waco; Krisanna Vardeman Byars and husband, Allyn, of San Angelo; Dana Wilson and husband, Buck, of Hubbard; and Gary Crye and wife, Doris, of Mt. Vernon. Zoie is also survived by her nephews, Jim Westberry of Dallas, and Joe Cantrell and wife, Helen, of Houston; and by many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Larry Vardeman, David Hester, Steve Garner, Matthew Vardeman, Thomas Vardeman, Max Garner, Jacob Cates, Dan Henderson, Jr., Daniel Robison and Randy Murphy.
